Behind the Scenes

Watch how Vores Danmark II (Our Denmark II) came to be using traditional techniques and street art graffiti. Watch the colours pop from the canvas and explode.

VORES DANMARK II

The love for a Denmark with energy is expressed energetically through an abstract design language and intense brushstrokes that lie like a wave across the canvas. A wave of memories and emotions flows over the map of Denmark and draws explosive energy after them.

by Julie Silbermann, art consultant and curator

“Our Denmark II” radiates a unique energy that is permeated by a love for the artist’s home country. A national feeling that was strengthened through last year’s lockdown, where the journey into art was the only journey we could take.

In Mikael’s studio in LA, the mental journey back to the home country began. Back to the place where hopes and dreams took off and where the artistic career began. The love for Denmark, the many fantastic contrasts we experience in Denmark, is expressed energetically through an abstract design language, and intense brush strokes, saturated with thick acrylic paint that settles like a wave over the canvas. A wave of memories and emotions flows over the map of Denmark and draws explosive energy from east to west after it. A direction that can be read into Mikael B’s own journey, where he pursued his dream and moved from Denmark to the USA.

Several of Mikael B’s works are characterized by being abstract with elements of fragmented landscapes. The sublime landscape has imprinted details of Romanticism, all while keeping it in his distinctive contemporary expression and composition, where spray paint is used with a steady and precise hand.

At first glance, the work appears as a magnificent and idealized almost sublime representation of Denmark, but if we dive under the white foam on top of the high waves that sweep over the work, honesty and longing stand out.

In the process, Mikael B has allowed thoughts and emotions to run free and created a balance between the coincidental and the controlled.

It was like a journey that started in the unknown, which ended at home in Denmark – a very unique feeling. Hereafter the completion, I am not only proud but also quite emotional, as I have a great longing for Denmark.– Mikael B

Mikael B manages to let color and form appear as equal quantities in the work but also subjects the work to an opportunity of subjective decoding, which is thereby shaped by our own culture.

The shape reflects Denmark’s contour while the pervasive shades of blue refer to the country’s endless coastline, the Nordic clear light, the strong blue sky, and the almost magenta and purple sunsets.

Mikael B’s work is distinct in its appearance but gets disintegrated and mixed with abstract shapes. Through this, Mikael B creates a strong expressionistic abstract painting that breaks with the traditional compositions and lets color-saturated formulas give the work a powerful personal expression and a strong love for his homeland, Denmark. – Our Denmark.
